Northumberland is England's most northern county - a spectacularly diverse and beautiful region with surprises and secrets to be discovered at every turn.

This was a frontier land where conflict and war was commonplace. Fortunately things are a lot more peaceful today, however such a turbulent history has meant that Northumberland is a place where you can truly get a glimpse of the past.

Dotted around the hills and high parts of the area immediately surrounding the village of Chatton, there are many examples of human habitation dating back to the regions pre-history with hill forts and many examples of the enigmatic rock art known as, "Cup & Ring" marks dating back well over 5,000 years.

The invading legions of Rome also left their mark upon the area, the most spectacular of which must be the World Heritage Site of Hadrian's Wall in the south of the county. Built to separate the "Romans from the Barbarians", Hadrian's Wall marked the northern boundary of Roman occupation in Europe - Certainly a "Must do" destination and easily reached in an unstressed hour or two by car.

Because of it's turbulent past, the area surrounding the accommodation here at Chatton boasts many fine castles and fortified houses.

Northumberland boasts more castles than any other English county. Spectacular medieval seats of power such as those at Alnwick, the ancestral home of the Duke & Duchess of Northumberland (and now famous as the location of the Harry Potter movies), The romantic cliff-top ruins of Dunstanburgh, Beautiful Warkworth castle overlooking the River Coquet as it winds its way to the sea, and not forgetting imposing Bamburgh Castle, well deserving its reputation of one of the finest castles in England.

Chatton lies within the corridor of land between England and Scotland which was known as the Debateable Lands. A place of bloody conflict and raids by bands of outlaws known as the Border Reivers.

The accommodation is ideally situated as a base to explore the many places of interest from these troubled times. From the "Grim fortress" of Hermitage Castle, to the glorious picture book tower of Smailholm - once the home of the Grandfather of Sir Walter Scott.

Today the area of North Northumberland is a place of peace and quiet. A place you can get away from it all with a stroll through the nearby Cheviot Hills - "The land of the far Horizon". Lying within the Northumberland National Park, The Cheviot Hills offer unsurpassed hill walking, mountain biking and a chance to encounter a wide range of wildlife uncommon in many other parts of the world.

We hope you enjoyed this brief tour of our region and hope it will inspire you to discover for yourself what a special place this is in the very near future. If you have any questions about the region or the accommodation on offer, please don't hesitate to contact us.
